Proof Penguin-zilla once roamed Earth
Move over emperor and king penguins – there's an even grander penguin in town. Scientists have discovered the fossilized remains of two enormous new species, and one of them was probably the largest penguin ever to waddle the Earth. Kumimanu fordycei was a 340 lb (154kg) mega-penguin more than twice the bulk of the average human, which fished the waters around New Zealand nearly 60 million years ago. Found inside beach boulders at North Otago on the southern end of South Island, the species had relatively primitive flipper bones, and probably emerged only just after penguins had lost the power of flight.
