Peru is famous for its many pre-Columbia civilizations (the most famous of which are the Inca). But the region of complex cultures existed long before the Inca and extended outside modern Peru's borders. Some Inca ruins can be found to the north in today's Ecuador, while other famous Inca ruins are to be found on an island (Isla del Sol) on a lake in Bolivia. But the Inca were just the last (and possibly grandest) of a long line of civilizations that rose and fell in the Andes Mountains.
One of the most impressive pre-Columbian (and pre-Inca) archeological sites in Bolivia is Tiwanaku. It is only around 70 kilometers or 40 miles from the capital city of La Paz. It is one of the largest archeological sites in South America and is located on the southern shores of Lake Titicaca. Another great pre-Inca marvel of South America is the desert city of Chan Chan, which people should visit in Peru.
